Firearms charges are often added to another case, and they carry mandatory consecutive terms in federal court.
Federal firearms statutes are unforgiving. A conviction for possession of a firearm in furtherance of another offense carries a mandatory term that runs consecutively to whatever sentence the underlying offense produces, and that term cannot be reduced by good conduct. Prohibited person charges turn on the defendant's status, and status is established by records that should be checked rather than assumed.
The government's evidence in these cases is frequently a stop, a search, or a statement. Each has legal requirements, and each can be challenged. Suppression is often the whole case, because the firearm is usually the only element in dispute.
